Types of Energy Storage Technology

2023/06/07 丨Technical

Energy storage technologies are crucial for future sustainable energy use. The energy stored in the energy storage system can be used urgently in case of sudden power failure or other situations, which is especially important for renewable energy systems that rely on intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind energy.

Battery Storage: The battery is one of the numerous common types of energy storage. It works by converting electrical energy into chemical energy and converting it into electricity, which is then stored in a battery. Common battery types used for energy storage include lithium-ion, lead-acid, nickel-based, and flow batteries.

Pumped Hydro Storage: Pumped hydro storage is a type of energy storage that involves pumping water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir. When electricity is needed, the water is released back into the lower reservoir to generate electricity as it flows through turbines. Pumped hydroelectric storage is currently the most widely used energy storage technology and is used in many utility-scale energy storage systems.

Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES): CAES is an energy storage technology that uses compressed air to store energy. It works by compressing air into an underground reservoir. When electricity is needed, the compressed air is released, heated, and passed through a turbine to generate electricity.

Thermal Energy Storage (TES): Thermal energy storage involves storing heat or cold for later use. There are three main types of TES: sensible heat storage, latent heat storage, and thermochemical storage. This can be done using a variety of materials, including water, molten salts, and phase-change materials.

Flywheel Storage: A flywheel is a mechanical energy storage technology that stores energy by rotating a rotor at high speed. The energy is converted into kinetic energy to rotate the mass and converted back to electrical energy by slowing down the rotation. Flywheels are relatively responsive energy storage technologies, making them ideal for use in applications that require fast response times.

Hydrogen Storage: The hydrogen storage system stores energy in the form of hydrogen, and it needs to use excess electricity to produce hydrogen through electrolysis of water and store it for emergencies. When electricity is needed, hydrogen can be used to generate electricity through fuel cells or burned in gas turbines.

In summary, there are many different types of technologies available for energy storage. The 6 different types of energy storage technologies can be used in different application scenarios to meet the needs of the times. As technology transitions towards a sustainable energy future, energy storage will also play an increasingly important role, enabling us to store excess renewable energy and use it when needed.
